Huquqyat co-founder Leila Sibai participated in a workshop on criminal accountability and transitional justice in Syria, held in Damascus on 14 and 15 September 2025, with the participation of representatives of civil society organisations working in the legal field, as well as members of the Independent Transitional Justice Commission.

The workshop focused on discussing possible legal options for holding perpetrators of international crimes in Syria accountable, and the role of civil society in developing transitional justice frameworks, including the need to adopt a gender-sensitive, victim- and survivor-centred approach. The discussions also addressed the importance of truth-seeking, protecting the rights of all victims, and ensuring non-selectivity in justice pathways, as well as the need for clear legal frameworks that take into account the specificity of the Syrian context and international standards of accountability.
