Huquqyat members and legal investigators Mariana Karkoutly and Leila Sibai participated in the “Syria Trials Podcast” to discuss issues of justice and giving testimony. The survivor-centered approach during investigations into war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Syria was also discussed.
“Witnesses are the lifeblood of criminal trials. But legal proceedings can be extremely difficult for witnesses. Retelling experiences, which were often traumatic, can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, and the possibility of being retraumatized looms forever. In this episode, we hear from a witness who testified in the Koblenz trial, and from legal practitioners who gave careful consideration to witnesses throughout the entire case-building process.”
