Huquqyat co-founder Mariana Karkoutly participated in the Seventh Brussels Conference on Syria and the region, which was held in Brussels on 14 and 15 June 2023, where she performed the role of rapporteur for the justice and accountability session during the Day of Dialogue and the Ministerial Meeting.
Mariana Karkoutly’s intervention focused on what was mentioned during the session regarding the importance of strengthening justice and accountability pathways for crimes committed in Syria, including supporting investigations and prosecutions against perpetrators of international crimes, and ensuring the integration of an intersectional gender perspective into transitional justice efforts and international investigations. She also stressed the necessity of revealing the fate of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons, supporting their families, and ending policies of impunity and normalization with perpetrators of violations, while emphasizing that justice and accountability form the basis of any democratic political transition that respects the rights and dignity of Syrians.
