Huquqyat co-founder Mariana Karkoutly participated in a briefing for the British Parliament with experts on “Syria’s Transition after Nine Months: Examining Frameworks of Justice and International Accountability,” held on 9 September 2025, and organized jointly by the Foreign Policy Centre, the Human Rights Institute of the International Bar Association, and the SEPAD project.
Mariana Karkoutly’s intervention focused on the necessity that justice in Syria be non-selective and not blind to the gender perspective, and that it include the prosecution of international crimes, the protection of mass graves and evidence, revealing the fate of the forcibly disappeared, and ensuring the participation of victims and survivors in justice processes. She also stressed the importance of reforming discriminatory laws against women, criminalizing gender-based violence, and ensuring independent and gender-sensitive investigations into recent violations, including the events in Suwayda, as an essential part of building a future based on dignity, equality, and the rule of law.
