Leila Sibai’s Participation in a Side Event on the Multiple Impacts of Enforced Disappearance in Syria

Huquqyat co-founder and board member Leila Sibai participated in a side event on the multiple impacts of enforced disappearance, organized jointly by: Families for Freedom, Caesar Families Association, Coalition of Families of Persons kidnapped by ISIS – MASSAR, Dawlaty, The Syria Campaign, the International Center for Transitional Justice, the Mission of Switzerland to the European Union, the Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the European Union, and the Permanent Representation of Luxembourg to the European Union.

The side event aimed to convey the voices of Syrian victims’ groups in their struggle for truth, justice, and accountability. It also highlighted the urgent necessity of taking into consideration the broad legal, social, and psychological consequences resulting from arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance in Syria. The discussion also strengthened understanding of the extent and nature of the double harm resulting from these crimes.
