Members of Huquqyat, Mariana Karkoutly and Dalia Qumsieh from the Balasan Initiative for Human Rights, participated in a podcast episode within the program “Oyoun Al-Kalam,” which was published in March 2025 across various digital platforms.
The episode focused on the crime of starvation under siege as a method of warfare, through a comparative approach between the Syrian and Palestinian contexts, particularly the siege of Yarmouk Camp in Damascus and the ongoing siege on Gaza. The episode addressed the similarities and differences between the two experiences, in addition to the challenges related to achieving legal accountability for these crimes and grave violations of international law.
The episode also shed light on the importance of building simplified and accessible legal awareness for Arabic-speaking audiences regarding the crime of starvation, and the necessity of documenting the experiences of victims and survivors and involving them in human rights and advocacy discussions. This initiative formed a space for cooperation between Huquqyat and the Balasan Initiative for Human Rights, within the framework of joint efforts to strengthen solidarity between Syrian and Palestinian human rights actors and to push toward more advocacy work for accountability and justice.
