Huquqyat co-founder Mariana Karkoutly participated in the Arab Conference at Harvard University in the United States of America, where she spoke about the challenges of transitional justice and accountability in Syria after the fall of the Assad regime. Her intervention was based on field visits she conducted to Syria, shedding light on the continuation of impunity, the reuse of some former detention centers, and the urgent need to protect sites of violations, mass graves, and documents related to detainees and forcibly disappeared persons.
Karkoutly also emphasized that justice in Syria cannot be postponed, and that the demands of victims and survivors revolve around practical and serious steps, including revealing the fate of the disappeared, preserving evidence, protecting victims, and building effective cooperation between local authorities, international accountability mechanisms, and Syrian civil society. She concluded by stressing that preventing the return of authoritarianism also requires preventing the return of silence regarding crimes and violations.
