2022 was Huquqyat’s first full year of operations and a foundational year for the organisation. We focused on building our internal structures, policies, and ways of working, while creating a trusted feminist legal space for Syrian women legal practitioners to connect, learn, and lead. During the year, Huquqyat invested in community-building and training, with sessions on feminist leadership, teamwork, conflict management, psychosocial support, and digital security. These efforts strengthened collective leadership, internal capacity, and wellbeing across the network.
Huquqyat also contributed to investigation files on crimes committed during the 2014 siege in South Damascus, supporting accountability efforts including an ongoing investigation by the Dutch war crimes unit and submissions to the IIIM. This work was grounded in a gender-sensitive and survivor-centred approach. In advocacy, Huquqyat developed its first advocacy action plan and engaged in international spaces including the UN Human Rights Council, the UN Security Council, and the Brussels VI Conference, bringing feminist legal perspectives into discussions on justice and accountability in Syria.
