2024 was a pivotal year in Huquqyat’s journey, coinciding with major political transformations in Syria, most notably the fall of the Assad regime and the beginning of a new transitional phase. In light of this exceptional moment, Huquqyat continued its work to advance feminist transformative justice, focusing on ensuring the presence of Syrian women in justice and accountability processes and in shaping Syria’s legal future.
During the year, Huquqyat strengthened its engagement in investigations into international crimes committed in Syria, particularly crimes related to the siege of South Damascus and the use of starvation as a weapon of war in Yarmouk Camp, in collaboration with international partners and through a gender-sensitive and survivor-centred approach. The organisation also continued to provide the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) and European prosecution authorities with the outputs of its investigations, in support of accountability efforts based on universal jurisdiction.
In parallel, Huquqyat expanded its direct impact inside Syria through the legal support project, providing free legal services to displaced women and women from local communities in north-west Syria, covering cases of custody, civil documentation, alimony, and legal protection. The organisation also organised legal awareness workshops and supported the training of young women lawyers with the aim of strengthening local feminist legal capacities.
In advocacy, Huquqyat participated in multiple international and regional spaces, including the Eighth Brussels Conference and legal and human rights events on starvation crimes and gender-based violence, and contributed to joint statements with Syrian civil society organisations. The organisation also continued working to raise awareness of starvation crimes and gender-related violations, and to connect the Syrian experience to broader global contexts.
During 2024, Huquqyat also focused on building internal capacities and strengthening its collective leadership model, through specialised trainings on universal jurisdiction, gender-sensitive investigations, digital security, and risk management, in addition to holding its annual meeting in Berlin with the participation of its members from inside and outside Syria.
As Syria enters a new phase, Huquqyat reaffirms its commitment to continuing its work for justice grounded in equality, dignity, and feminist leadership, and to building a future in which women are not excluded from justice processes and decision-making.
