In a precedent that is the first of its kind since the fall of the former regime, Atef Najib, former head of the Political Security Branch in Daraa, appeared before the Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus on charges related to grave violations during the events in Daraa in 2011. This paper was prepared by lawyer Rasha Shahbaz, a member of Huquqyat, and reviews the main procedural and legal facts of the case, while highlighting the open questions that will shape the course of justice in Syria.
